“Coat of Hands”

Glazed Ceramic, 39 participating community members, 2026

Principal Artist: Sophie Arango Nebeker

Partners: Salt Lake City Arts Council, Sugar House Community Council, Petersen Art Center, Iron Desert Arts, The Neighborhood Hive

Located on the exterior of The Neighborhood Hive in the Sugar House area at 2065 East 2100 South SLC, UT

Led by artist Sophie Arango Nebeker, this community-made ceramic mosaic is created by 39 different locals.

Tiles were decorated by participants over the course of two workshops led by Sophie using her provided custom hand-made stamps for folks to create texture on slabs of clay. The workshops were held and the tiles were glazed and fired at two local ceramic studios Petersen Art Center and Iron Desert Arts.
The mural was installed in August of 2026, with the help of glass, tile, and stone artist Barry Dwyane Hollis, using traditional grouting methods.
This colorful, textured and vibrant public artwork holds the handicraft of the community members that make Salt Lake a thriving arts area!

This project was made possible with funding from the Salt Lake City Arts Council, Sugar House Community Council, and participating community members
