These are coral skeletons that belong to the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum collection.  These photographs were taken with DSLR and 60mm lense with a magnification ratio from 1:1- 1:3. Each image is a composite of 20+ images taken at different distances from the specimen allowing focus in the whole depth of field. 




These images were taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at the museum. The SEM is able to resolve far smaller details than a camera lense can.  A camera uses photons to produce an image, while the SEM uses electrons, which  detect finer structures as electrons are smaller particle than photons, to produce an image.
