Project Overview:
We are bringing a community-made ceramic mosaic that will be installed on a public facing wall at the Neighborhood Hive in the Sugar House area. This craft based experience will be held over two workshops at local ceramic studios to create a colorful, textured and vibrant public artwork. The mural will be unveiled in a free event at The Neighborhood Hive August 2026.
Hosted by Iron Desert Arts and Peterson Art Center, we invite the general public for this material experience, a total of 40 participants will explore impressions and texture decorating provided 4x4 inch blank tile shape. Assisted by local ceramic artists, this 2 hour workshop is accessible for all skill levels, with a demo on carving and textures in an exploratory environment.
Providing a pre-made blank tile for workshop participants will control the aesthetic of the overall piece, while setting boundaries for participants to work in.
Outside of the workshops, we will prepare to install the glazed durable ceramic tiles at the exterior entrance of The Neighborhood Hive. Consulting with Barry Dwyane Hollis, professional mosaic artist, we will install the tiles over 2 days in early August.
To commemorate this collaborative community efforts, an unveiling event will occur in the parking lot of The Neighborhood Hive in late August. Good vibes with refreshments from the cafe itself, and local musicians and vendors. Outreach for the workshops and unveiling event will be conducted through collaborative business channels while grant funds are allocated to materials, participating artists, and studios.
